Teething Pain Tips and What Worked for My Sons
Updated to add what works for my second son as well!
How I soothed both of my sons’ terrible teething pain
Both of my sons were one of the unlucky babies where their teeth like to pop up and go back down and take months to finally cut through and grow in. They also bothered them A LOT and it breaks my heart. Both of my sons started teething between three and four months old so I had to come up with creative ways to soothe their gums outside of the typical frozen food in a mesh bag trick. Here are my top 3 tips and tricks for teething pain relief.
Tip #1 Breastmilk Popsicle
There are tons and tons of different versions of what people tend to call a “momsicle” which is a popsicle made from breast milk (or if your baby isn’t breastfed you can use formula instead and that’s exactly what I did when we stopped breastfeeding for my first son at 7 months) but a lot of them made me very nervous for safety reasons.
One version of making a momsicle that I came across was filling an ice cube tray with breastmilk and putting pacifiers in each slot until the milk froze around the pacifier. But, that made me nervous because I was worried my sons might choke on a chunk of the frozen breastmilk if it broke off.
So one day I happened upon these pureed food feeders and decided I would try to make popsicles by filling these feeders with breastmilk and freezing them. This way my boys could suck and chew on these without any chunks being able to break off. (it’s basically like you fill a pacifier that has small holes in it) They LOVED THEM! I mean seriously loved them, my oldest son would flail his arms and kick his legs because he was so excited when I would bring one out for him. They help his gums feel so much better and I don’t have to worry about him choking! (Just a warning: as the popsicle melts the slush can come out the end of the feeder)
Tip #2 Teether Toys
I must have bought my kids or they were given at least 50 different teething toys and as I am sure you know baby stuff is expensive! Of the 50 toys, they have there are three that they seriously love.
First, my oldest son’s favorite is his “coffee cup.” It is a Fisher-Price plastic coffee cup with a soft silicone ring around the top. It is so adorable because when he chews on it, it looks like he is drinking a tiny mini coffee. Second, is my youngest son’s favorite the Munch Mitt. I’m not sure who invented the Munch Mit but whoever you are thank you! This little glove goes on your child’s hand and Velcros around their wrist to keep it on and they can just chew away. It is awesome! Finally, is the Infantino monkey. This toy suction cups to any flat hard surface. The head and body of the monkey turn and make a clicking sound that both of my sons love! The foot that isn’t a suction cup has a mirror and my oldest son would bust out laughing when he caught my reflection in the mirror. The toy is adorable, they loves to chew on it and it suction cups to his Bumbo tray, high chair, stroller, basically anywhere we need it to!
Tip #3 Teething bibs
The Nuby teething bibs are seriously the best. They are super cute bandana style bibs with a teether corner! They are the best of both worlds since they catch all the drool that inevitably comes along with teething and also has a teether that is always in reach for your little one. I seriously love them! Another great trick I learned was to get the bib damp and freeze it to let him chew on it. It is cold to soothe his gums but still super soft so it feels great on sore little mouths.
They say “this too shall pass” but that’s not really comforting me when I think about his molars growing in… **My oldest son is now 2 and 3 of his molars are finally in! The molars actually weren’t as bad as I thought they were going to be. They definitely broke up his sleep for a few weeks and he had his hands in his mouth all the time but they were definitely easier than his first teeth.

I’m not sure my son is teething but keeps pushing out saliva out of his mouth every second
Tons of saliva can definitely be a sign of teething? Is your son chew on everything? Or, when you peek in his mouth do you see any sore looking spot where his teeth may be coming in? If this is his first set of teeth the bottom two front teeth are usually first to emerge.
Nippii just came out with a FREEZABLE pacifier. Its almost exactly like the ones babies are used to using from the hospital. It just has a closure on the back so the ice cube wont fall out the back or melt all over the baby. You just fill the pacifier with water and freeze.
Oooo I just had my second son I will have to check this out thanks!
That’s awesome!
Great information! My kid is slobbering all over our house right now so I think it’s safe to say he’s teething. That milk popsicle is genius btw! Jess do I get those freezable teether pacifiers from Amazon or do you know where else? I looked at http://www.nippii.com but they were out of stock. Does anyone know where to get these water filled binky Thanks so much!
Hi Rebecca!
For the pacifier like things that I used to fill with milk (or you could fill with water) here is the link on Amazon https://amzn.to/2M9HczI Good luck with your little one. I would love to hear how teething is going and if these tips helped your little one!
You should mention that these tips aren’t actually for kids as old as 3 months. Like the headline suggests.. my softer is 3 months old with severe teething pain and she can’t hold anything yet. Tips for 3 month old would be like thieves with coconut oil to numb their gums, etc etc
