Moving is the worst am I right? All the packing and labeling and more packing and bubble wrap. Oy. But, it doesn’t have to be the absolute worst. Moving hacks to make your life a little bit easier
- Label all of your moving boxes with what room they belong in, what is inside of them and the level of importance. So, for example, one box may say “Master Bedroom – My work clothes – Unpack first!” or another may say “Guest bathroom – Towels – Unpack as needed”
- Keep everything you need for packing in a Tupperware bin. I finally got so sick and tired of searching everywhere for the packing tape and markers I started using a Tupperware container to keep it all so it is easy to spot when looking for it. Pro tip: I a big bright metallic bow to make it even easier to see!
- If you have kids put your children’s toys in plastic totes. I separated all of my kid’s toys into four different totes. Which made packing easy and I now only bring out one bin a month. So at the end of the month I put away all the current toys and bring in a new bin and it is like they got all new toys! They no longer get bored of or overwhelmed by all of their toys.
- (If you have young kids) Use a storage company like PODS. So this is a pricey hack but bear with me. I have a two-year-old and a 4-month-old when I moved I needed to be able to do a majority of my packing at night once they were asleep. So being able to put the boys to bed and be able to watch them on the monitor while my husband and I loaded up the POD in our driveway made like sooo much easier.
- Use your luggage to pack like you are going away for a weekend. I packed each of us a bag so we had everything we would need for the weekend we moved in. It takes a long time before you will have your house totally set up. I have lived in my new house for almost three months and I still have unpacking to do. Like, a lot of unpacking left to do. So, those first few days while your entire house is an explosion of boxes, bubble wrap, and packing tape it is nice to have everything you need without digging through boxes.
How to save money during your move
- Get your moving boxes from local stores. We got every single one of our moving boxes for free from a local grocery store! You can also check your local moms Facebook group for people giving away their moving boxes.
- Mom Facebook groups for the win! Check your local Facebook mom groups for moving company deals. A local mom told me about a moving company she used that moved 10 pieces of her furniture for $60… $60!!
- Compare prices for storage companies. For example, did you know there are TONS of companies that bring storage containers to your driveway? PODS, U-Haul, PACK-RAT, Go minis, the list goes on. So compare prices and negotiate a better deal. Don’t just go with the listed price!
- Sell things you don’t really need. Now I am not a minimalist by any means but selling old clothes, shoes, weird kitchen gadgets, etc. that you haven’t touched in years will not only save you time and money on storage and packing but it will make you some money. Win-Win!
- Buy your packing supplies from hardware stores, not grocery superstores. Hardware stores will have a much bigger selection of brands which will allow for more competitive pricing.
- Use cheap wax paper to fill the empty spaces in boxes to prevent things from moving around. I got bulk boxes on clearance for $5 a box. This was around 700 sheets. You can also use newspaper but it leaves ink all over and I hated it!
Moving is so much work but it is also so exciting! You will be moving into a new home where you will be making new memories. I hope these moving hacks make your life easier and save you some money. If this helps you leave me a comment and share this on Pinterest!
