Fun ways to decorate Easter eggs that isn't dying them

Original post: March 18, 2018

I love the idea of dying Easter Eggs. I like the tradition and the beautiful myriad of colors when it’s all finished. But, really, I hate actually dying them! I get bored after the first egg and end up with technicolor fingertips. I am also a sucker for traditions so I’d hate to cut this activity out forever. So, this year I decided to find new and fun ways to decorate Easter eggs!

*For most of these you will need a pot of boiling water

Option 1: Paint them!

This option is definitely my new favorite way to decorate Easter eggs. It is really fun, fast and super easy. And best of all cheap!

What you will need

  • eggs (white, any size and buy as many as you want to decorate)
  • paint (I used six different colors but you can use as many or as little as you want)

  • a tall-ish box (I used an old Chewy box from my dog food that I had already used to spray paint something else hence the blue bottom in the pictures) just make sure the walls are high enough to catch any paint splatter. Don’t have a big box? This is a great excuse to order some Amazon Prime stuff am I right? If you’re not a member yet seriously it’s the best check it out!

How to do it

Painted Easter eggs

  1. Hard boil as many eggs as you want to decorate. Everyone has their own method to hard boil eggs. Seriously who would have thought people are ride or die about how to boil an egg? My method, I put them in the water before it is boiling bring it to a boil and let them boil for 10-ish minutes. Let them cool before moving on to next step. If you don’t have time to let them cool naturally you can put them in an ice water bath until they are cool and dry them off.
  2. Put eggs in the bottom of the box
  3. Paint! All I did was literally squirt the paint over the eggs back and forth until it had the amount of each color that I wanted. You can also use a brush to splatter the paint if you want that sort of look.
  4. Let them dry overnight! Some of mine were still a little wet where the paint pooled at the bottom. I just used a paper towel to dab the wet paint and let them dry a little longer.
  5. Put on display and impress your guests.

Option 2: Necktie dyed

Must try Easter egg decorating ideas!

This makes some insanely beautiful and unique patterns. I can’t wait to do this again next year and use tons of different ties, colors, and patterns. Honestly, I will probably order cheap ties from Amazon!

What you need

  • several old neckties that you or someone you know no longer wants (you can dye 2-3 eggs with each necktie)
  • rubber bands (I used hair ties because well mom brain and I forgot the rubber bands and hey they worked great but I had to throw them out afterward because they were full of dye.)
  • white vinegar
  • small-medium eggs (as many as you want to dye)

How to do it

Necktie dyed Easter Eggs

  1. Add your vinegar to the boiling water and bring it back to a boil (2 parts water 1 part vinegar. You need enough liquid to fully submerge the egg)
  2. Cut a rectangle piece of the tie. 6-8 inches long. You need it to be long enough to wrap the egg and tie off both ends with a rubber band. Like a piece of candy. It also needs to be wide enough to wrap around the whole egg so you can’t use the narrower part of the tie. (see pic above)
  3. Put in boiling water for 20 mins.
  4. Use tongs to remove from water and let it cool
  5. Unwrap and enjoy!

Option 3: Potato stamp eggs!

This is a fun way to do an Easter theme art project with your little ones with items you have at home.

Potato stamp Easter egg project

What you need

  • Potatoes
  • A knife (for any children reading this please make sure you have an adult with you to help you with this step)
  • Paper (Any paper will work. I used plain white printer paper.)
  • Paint
  • Foam paint brushes

  • Something for a backdrop (like old newspaper or a poster board basically anything you don’t mind getting paint on)

How to do it

How to make potato Easter egg stamps

  1. Lay the backdrop on the table, floor, driveway or wherever you are going to paint the pictures
  2. Put a couple sheets of paper on the backdrop
  3. Cut the potato in half the long way (Again, adults only for this step please)
  4. Cut out shapes in the potato to make a “stamp”. So whatever you cut out will be the blank space in the picture (Seriously, you need an adult. See pic above.)
  5. Use the foam brushes to paint the parts of the potato that you didn’t cut
  6. Push the painted potato on the paper just like a rubber stamp
  7. Optional: use the foam brush to outline the egg to give it more of an egg look. You can also use the foam brushes to paint grass, an Easter basket or anything!
  8. Display on your fridge and enjoy!

This Year’s Final Product!

I can’t wait to try all of these with my son. Probably next Easter since he is still a little young this year. It is going to be our new tradition to find fun, new and interesting ways to decorate Easter eggs. I hope you like these ideas. Give us a pin if you want to try these!
